DIY Antibacterial Cleaning Spray

This all-purpose cleaner is exactly that; I use it for the kitchen, the loo seat, floors and even cleaning the windows.  Vodka is an excellent cleaner that kills germs, is non streak and dries quickly making it great for shiny surfaces.  Vinegar is great at de-greasing whilst the essential oils add extra anti-bacterial power.  Best of all it is completely non-toxic for my family and the environment; of course you still don’t want your kids to pick it up and take a swig, and so I store it with the rest of my cleaning products beyond the reach of inquisitive hands.

In terms of storage, I have recycled an old ecover spray bottle but you could certainly purchase one from amazon.  Glass is generally best for essential oils but since the oils are quite diluted a high quality plastic, like that used for cleaning spray bottles is just fine.

I have found that this cleaner works just as well as any I have bought, and I certainly think it’s better than the ecover multi-action spray I used to use before this.

Lavender, tea tree, orange, lemon and peppermint (or a combination) are all great antibacterial oils for cleaning. Young Living’s ‘Thieves’ essential oil blend of clove, lemon, cinnamon, eucalyptus and rosemary is a particularly good antibacterial and antiviral oil that I like to use, including in my homemade toothpaste and ant spray.  Legend has it the blend was developed by a group of thieves to protect them whilst they robbed the victims of the plague.

This cleaner is perfect for kitchen surfaces, taps, wiping the loo seat, floors, windows and mirrors.  Simply shake well, spray onto the surface and wipe with a microfiber cloth (although for the loo I tend to use strong kitchen roll so that I can just dispose of it).

  • 200ml cooled boiled water
  • 150ml white vinegar
  • 150ml cheap vodka
  • Few drops of washing up liquid
  • 15 drops of essential oils

Done!
